Construction, erosion
& what remains.

David Glinski is a Brooklyn-based artist working in large-scale abstract collage, décollage and mixed-media painting. His material vocabulary grows out of his experience around his father’s construction work and his own experience renovating homes.

Salvaged street posters, advertisements, subway maps and newspapers meet house paint, spray paint, plaster, concrete and burlap. Through layering, scraping, sanding and tearing, he explores how surfaces accumulate history and how removing material reveals unexpected relationships beneath.

Glinski began a figurative practice in 2020, when the pandemic created time and space to discover art as a means of self-understanding. His current body of work extends that exploration through abstraction.

Artist statement

I work with materials I know from construction and renovation, alongside posters and printed fragments collected from the street. I build them into layers, then scrape, sand, scratch and tear them back. Adding and removing are both ways of finding the painting.

I look for expression and chance to emerge from the disruption. I’m drawn to surfaces that hold a sense of time: the way erosion exposes strata in the earth, revealing colors, textures and patterns that were previously hidden.

I choose printed material largely for color and shape. When words remain, I sometimes follow their influence or play with the meanings they introduce. My emotions affect what I preserve, cover or dismantle. Some paintings require a complete reworking; others need weeks untouched before I return to them.

The process stays open. Each painting carries the traces of decisions, interruptions and discoveries made along the way.
